Power systems: How to detect and reduce harmonics, distortion and noise

Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024

Power systems for industrial, manufacturing and other energy-intensive production facilities requires careful design and coordination. These facilities need to maintain power (including maintaining power quality) to eliminate product losses. Increasingly, power quality, harmonics and distortion must be managed and mitigated.

Anyone responsible for plant electrical systems should understand IEEE 519 – 2014 Recommended Practice and Requirements for Harmonic Control in Electric Power Systems.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand how to evaluate and analyze the power needs for manufacturing technologies and systems.
  • Consider uninterruptible power supply systems, variable frequency drives and other power systems that reduce or add to power quality issues.
  • Know the various ways to measure and reduce harmonics and distortion.
  • Learn about best practices through examples and case studies.
